Birds of our Land in Alentejo, Portugal

Booted Eagle

The Booted Eagle is the smallest species of eagle in our area, with a wingspan of “only” 110 to 135cm. It is quite similar to the Common Buzzard in size and shape, but the plumage, especially in the light morph, is quite different. There are indeed two morphs of the Booted Eagle : the light morph (with white underbody and underwing-coverts, which contrast strongly with the black flight feathers) and the dark morph (with dark brown underbody and underwing-coverts). The Booted Eagle is a summer visitor in our area, most of the individuals winter in Africa but a few ones stay in South Western Spain.

2022 : We have had a few sightings of this beautiful raptor on our land for this first season, and we are very grateful for it.
