6 birds wintering in our nature reserve in Alentejo
Many birds are living on our land all year long, such as the Eurasian Hoopoe, or the Sardinian Warbler. But some are only here for winter. These are the wintering species. They spend the breeding season higher North, in Western or Northern Europe, and migrate down in fall to spend the whole winter in Southern Portugal. We have noticed slight differences in the times these species arrive and leave. Of course, it is only our observations on our land, and we probably miss some sightings, but it does give a good idea of the birds behaviour.
Eurasian Blackcap. Late september early october to mid or end of march. The Eurasian Blackcap seems to be the first wintering species to arrive on our land.
European Robin. Early october to mid or end of march.
Common Chiffchaff. Early or mid october to mid march.
Black Redstart. Mid october to mid march.
Meadow Pipit. Mid october to end of march.
Song Thrush. Mid october to end of march.
We can notice that all these 6 bird species are gone by April. These are wonderful beautiful birds, adding to the many resident species we can see at any time of the year. So if you are interested in birding in Alentejo in winter with us, feel free to contact us.
